Future Session #2: Earth Observation & Big Data Analysis (The Spindle)Datum: 26 maart 2019
In 2019, The Spindle and the Hague Humanity Hub collaborate in organising a series of (almost) monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work!
Future Session #2
Did you know that there are almost 5000 satellites moving around our planet at the moment? Some of them look for life outside our galaxy, but most of them actually make our lives a lot easier and safer. Wondering how they do this? Then join this Future Session that we organise in collaboration with Space4Good.
Space4Good advises NGOs and social enterprises. This includes advice on how satellite earth observation and geoinformation platforms can help them make better, faster and cheaper decisions while mapping and tracking the impact they achieve. For example, they advised a social enterprise that is planting trees to offset their CO2 emissions, to track whether the trees are really planted.
In this session, Alexander Gunkel, founder of Space4Good, will be our expert on this topic. He will share with you the fundamentals of earth observation, introduce new satellite systems and present some of the projects his company worked on. Questions to be answered are: what can I see with a satellite, what are the costs and can I protect myself from being observed. But also: can I download and work with images myself? And where do get them? After, it’s your turn to come up with ideas and thoughts on how satellites and maps can help your organisation to monitor and visualise the work you are doing.
With this video, you will get already a small introduction on this topic.
